Promote "Greenness" on Your Hotel's Website
Why would a hotel go to the effort, and sometimes expense, of getting a green certification and not tell its guests about it? That action is all too common. And an action that baffles me.
Promoting your specific green actions is the sign a hotel is proud of its environmentally friendly actions and sustainable operations. A hotel is truly green when it announces on its website the hotel's environmental policies and attitudes. The logo of the green certification program, awards and associations is another good item a hotel can post on its website.
I personally find a hotel's claims of being green less credible if specific actions aren't enumerated so anyone can see what steps they have decided to take, what plans they have for future actions, and that their general attitude about sustainability is. Vague and sweeping statements of what environmental actions might be taken by a chain just doesn't cut it as informative.
There are state-wide, national and international green certifications a hotel can seek. And of course a hotel can develop its own green plan without being certified. And even when a hotel is certified, telling guests what additional green steps have been taken shows just how much care has gone into determining the environmental policies, how much green "heart" a hotel management team has.
Are you a green hotel? Then boldly tell people what makes you green -- right on your website. If you are a traveler who cares about staying at sustainable hotels, be sure to comment on the presence or lack of clear information about a hotel's green policies and actions.
