"Ethical Marketplace", the PBS series
PBS will be airing "Ethical Marketplace" starting March 15 (though check your local programming because I saw mention of a January start date too). It's a weekly half-hour program dedicated to reporting on the people, companies, and governments who are redefining success with socially and environmentally responsible lifestyles, business practices, and investments. "Ethical Marketplace" will cover real-life stories that demonstrate an increasingly popular standard of corporate citizenship, measured by a triple bottom line -- people profit, and planet.
The weekly topics include issues like renewable energy, social responsibility, FairTrade, eco-efficiency, green building, organic agriculture, socially responsible investing, and corporate social responsibility. This program will show consumers and investors how they can align their investments with their beliefs, and visions for a better future. The series will highlight the most ethical companies and their executives, the cleanest and greenest technologies, and the private citizens pushing toward a more ethical approach to business, investing, and living.
Each episode will include in-studio and field-based segments, and examine the overall topic from multiple viewpoints. You'll hear engaging discussions with executives from Fortune 500 companies to small start-ups. There will be personal stories of people seeking value and success. The producers will supply an historical perspective, indicators of success and quality of life, new technologies, as well as realistic projections for the future.
"Business leaders are increasingly realizing the value of an economic model that measures business success by focusing on the greater community and environment, as well as profit," says Hazel Henderson, the creator and co-producer of the series. Every company featured on ethical marketplace is vetted by a screening process to ensure they support a socially and environmentally responsible business model. I think this series will be valuable to those of us in the hospitality industry wanting to improve our bottom line and the quality of life around us.
