Down the Drain

I drink lots of water, even when I'm eating in a restaurant. Most of the people I know don't drink much water, but instead opt for tea, coffee or sodas. So when a community is feeling the pinch of water due to drought, or other cause of a water shortage, restaurants often will provide water for their patrons upon request.

At first, not having water brought to me immediately bothered me because it meant I had to wait a bit longer for it. But upon reflection, I've decided that water upon request is an environmentally sound approach to service. First of all, by "ordering" my glass of water I get it the way I like it — without ice. Second, by providing water only for those who want it enough to ask, undrunk water isn't being poured down the drain, and water isn't wasted washing a glass that wasn't needed.

Consider adopting a "water on request" policy in your restaurant. The water you save by not making ice, filling the glass, or washing the glass will save you money. Water conservation is an ECOnomically Sound decision.
