Monitoring Energy Consumption Pays

This article is reprinted with permission from Hospitable Climates

For most hospitality businesses, the real motivation for reducing energy consumption is cost savings. These (and the maximum possible contribution towards environmental protection) will only be realised if your business sets a process in place for monitoring energy consumption and targeting improvements. Some businesses -- especially those with a large number of individual units have adopted a particularly rigorous approach towards monitoring their energy consumption and have reaped the benefits of these programmes. Accor -- one of the largest hotel companies in the world -- has been particularly successful. With an annual energy and water bill of £4.2 million for its 85 UK hotels and an impressive commitment to sustainable development, the business has a strong environmental and financial motivation to make savings.

Kitchens Are a Great Energy Saving Locations

By Ian McKerracher, former Chief Executive of the Restaurant Association, now landlord of The Helyar Arms, East Coker, Somerset.

When we moved out of London a year ago, to our new home in Somerset, I made a promise to myself that I would become a better custodian of our natural resources. In the city, it's so easy to fall into bad habits. Leaving a lamp on in every room of your house doesn't seem so profligate when there are thousands of streetlights illuminating the night. At home, we now recycle glass, plastic and aluminium cans. Our kitchen waste goes onto the compost heap and garden off-cuts are seasoned for use as firewood.

Though the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) did not adopt Hospitable Climates until January 2001, the HCIMA's Government-backed energy-efficiency advisory programme has played a significant role in helping the EICC to reduce its energy consumption. The EICC has saved a cumulative total of £70,000 (US$131,508) on energy costs since 1998, showing a continuous year-on-year percentage fall in energy consumption. Indeed, in 2003 total energy costs fell by three percent over the 2002 figure, which was itself nine per cent down on the 2001 figure. Last year, the EICC's Environmental Green Team was able to report that electricity costs for the year to October were down by £7,000 (US$13,151) on the 2002 figure, despite consumption increasing by three per cent due to increased business usage.
